Rising utility bills can quickly eat into your budget — but the good news is that renters can still make impactful changes without making major upgrades. Whether you're in an apartment or a single-family rental, here are some simple, landlord-friendly ways to cut down your energy costs.
💡 Swap Out Bulbs
If your unit still has incandescent bulbs, consider switching to LEDs. They use up to 80% less energy and last significantly longer — saving both energy and replacement costs over time.
🌡️ Be Smart About Thermostat Use
Adjust your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and higher in the summer when you're not home. Even a 1–2 degree shift can result in meaningful savings throughout the year.
🚿 Conserve Water
Simple tweaks like turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth, using a low-flow showerhead (check with your landlord first), and doing full loads of laundry can reduce both water and heating costs.
🔌 Unplug and Power Down
Devices and chargers still draw power even when they're off — known as "phantom load." Unplug items or use a power strip to cut off energy to multiple devices with one switch.
🪟 Use Curtains to Your Advantage
During colder months, open your blinds during the day to let in natural warmth, and close them at night to keep heat in. In summer, keep blinds closed during peak sun hours to reduce the load on your AC.
Bonus Tip: Keep communication open with your landlord. They may be open to energy-efficient upgrades like better weather stripping or programmable thermostats — especially if you offer to share in the cost.
